What are the School of Law's admission requirements?
As a candidate for admission, you must have earned a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university prior to your enrollment, you must also have a valid Law School Admission Test (LSAT) score, and you must have registered with the JD Credential Assembly Service (CAS) through the Law School Admission Council (LSAC). When is the application deadline?
You should submit required application materials at the earliest possible date after they are available and complete your applicant file no later than March 1 (priority deadline) of the year you wish to attend. However, please note that we use a rolling admission process; meaning, we evaluate files in the order that they are received and complete.
Does it matter when I turn in my application?
Yes, it can make a difference. We have a rolling admission process, so the Admission Committee begins reviewing completed applications in late November. Although the priority deadline is March 1, we recommend that you submit your application as early in the admission cycle as possible.
How much is the application fee?
$60 U.S.D. if you apply after February 1. The fee is typically waived if you apply before February 1.
What factors are considered in the admission decision?
The Admission Committee carefully reviews all materials submitted by each applicants and emphasizes three factors:
- Performance on the Law School Admission Test (LSAT);
- Undergraduate academic performance; and
- Personal and professional accomplishments.
How does the Admission Committee view multiple LSAT scores?
If an applicant has more than one LSAT score, the Committee normally gives greater weight to the highest score. However, the Committee does not disregard previous scores, and applicants are encouraged to discuss their prior performance in an addendum to their application if there is a significant difference (five points or more) between LSAT scores.
Will the committee look at my application if I get it in early, but still am missing some information?
No. The committee will not review a file until we have all application materials including the LSAC CAS Report, both letters of recommendation, the application fee, personal statement, and resume. In addition, all questions on the application must be answered in full. Your application must be complete before it will be reviewed by the committee.
Who should I ask to write my letters of recommendation?
Recommendations that focus on your academic skills (writing, analytical abilities, work ethic, etc.) are especially helpful. If you have been out of an academic setting for a number of years, employers, supervisors, or other professional colleagues are often best prepared to submit persuasive recommendations on your behalf.
How should I submit my letters of recommendation?
Arrange to have two (we will accept up to a maximum of three) letters of recommendation submitted by your recommenders through the Law School Admission Council letter of recommendation service. LSAC will then release the letters to the law school(s) to which you are applying upon your request.
How do I check the status of my file?
You may check the status of your application online at any time through Application Status Check. We will alert you of your admission decision through Application Status Check and via email. Please make certain that you provide a current email address along with your application materials.
I have already submitted my application but now I would like to add additional information, what should I do?
Due to the high number of applicants, we strongly discourage the submission of supplementary application materials after the initial application has been received by the Office of Admission. Please ensure that your application is complete at the time it is submitted. However, a limit of one additional document (PDF only) may be submitted directly to the law school. Note that the submission of supplemental materials may delay the Admission Committee's ability to timely review an otherwise complete application.
Does the School of Law offer a part-time program?
Seattle University is proud to offer the only part-time evening program in Washington State. Created to meet the needs of working professionals and parents, this four-year program meets just three nights a week during the first two years.
Does the School of Law offer joint degree programs?
Yes. Along with the highly regarded Albers School of Business, we offer four joint MBA degree programs; Master of Business Administration (J.D. /M.B.A), Master of International Business (J.D. /M.I.B), a Master of Science in Finance (J.D. /M.S.F), or a Master of Professional Accounting (J.D ./M.P.A.C.). We also offer a J.D./Masters with the Institute for Public Service (J.D. /M.P.A), a J.D./Master of Sports Administration and Leadership (J.D./M.S.A.L.) and a J.D./Masters in Transformational Leadership (J.D./M.TL) with the School of Theology and Ministry. Student participants of the joint-degree program must be admitted separately to both the School of Law and the accompanying graduate program. We strongly urge joint degree candidates to complete the first year of law school before enrolling in joint degree courses.
When does the School of Law begin accepting applications?
Application materials are available to candidates in early September. The Admission Committee makes most admission decisions between December and March, but a number of candidates may be admitted during the late spring and early summer months.
My file is complete. Can I call the office to see if my file is in committee or if a decision has been made on my application?
We do not give admission decisions over the phone. Please note all decisions will be sent via e-mail and published online through Application Status Check. Application statuses are updated as soon as a decision is made on each applicant's file.
How much is tuition?

When do courses begin for the entering class?
Students starting in the summer begin attending classes in mid to late June. The fall semester typically begins in late August. There is a required orientation for all students the week before classes begin in August. For specific dates, please see the Academic Calendar.
What are the requirements for transferring to the School of Law?
In addition to the materials required for first-year applicants, transfer applicants must submit:
- An official transcript that covers the entire period of attendance at the law school in which the student was previously enrolled;
- A letter from the dean of that law school certifying that the student is in good standing and eligible to return to study; and
- Class rank. The letter of good standing and class rank must cover the entire period of attendance and must be based on no less than completion of the first year.
What is the deadline for transfer applications?
While there is no official deadline, you are encouraged to submit your application before August to allow the Admission Committee enough time to make a decision in advance of the late-August start of school.
